5 - Five-day Online Training Programme on
“ ‘Exploring Deafblindness! Empowering Societies’ ”
Date: 29th June-3rd July

Deafblindness is a unique condition characterised by a combination of visual and hearing impairments. Though the degree of sensory loss may vary from person to person, the simultaneous impact on sight and hearing creates significant challenges in communication, mobility, and access to information. Since approximately 95% of human learning is mediated through vision and hearing, individuals with deafblindness face profound difficulties in interacting with their environment, making this one of the most isolating disabilities. Despite its severity, deafblindness remains a low-incidence and often hidden disability in the community, with limited visibility and awareness.
To address this gap, CIET-NCERT, in partnership with Sense International India, is organising a five-day online training programme titled ‘Exploring Deafblindness! Empowering Societies’ from 29th June to 3rd July 2026, aligning with DeafBlind Awareness Week and Helen Keller Day. The training programme aims to build knowledge and awareness among educators, caregivers, and the general public by introducing the causes, communication strategies, assistive technologies, and support systems essential for individuals with deafblindness.

Objectives

After completion of the training programme, the participants will be able to:

  1. Develop a foundational understanding of deafblindness, including its causes, types, and impact on communication, learning, and daily life.
  2. Understand effective communication strategies and alternative modes of communication tailored to the unique needs of individuals with deafblindness.
  3. Gain knowledge of inclusive educational practices and adaptations that facilitate the learning and active participation of students with deafblindness.
  4. Explore opportunities for vocational training, employment, independent living, and community participation for individuals with deafblindness.
  5. Become aware of assistive technologies and support services that promote accessibility, independence, and improved quality of life.
  6. Learn from persons with Deafblindness to foster positive attitudes and empathy.
Who Can Participate?

Anybody and everyone interested in understanding about deafblindness can participate without any prior experience.
