Overview

India is a multilingual and multicultural country. The linguistic expressions and cultural awareness are important contributors to individual as well as societal well-being. Keeping in view its socio-cultural-linguistic diversity, the National Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 soundly concentrates on the promotion of Indian languages. It aims to uphold Indian languages by using them consistently, by creating curriculum materials and teaching-learning resources, by implementing mother tongues/home languages/local languages/regional languages as the medium of instruction, by devising innovative approaches, providing technology-based solutions and cultivating a positive attitude towards all languages and their remarkable unity (NEP, 2020). Under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has taken initiatives to achieve the above mentioned goals of NEP 2020. The Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), a constituent unit of NCERT has undertaken a project ‘Translation of NCERT Contents in 22 Indian Languages’. Its aim is to translate NCERT textbooks, policy documents and other resources in 22 scheduled Indian languages listed under the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
