"Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education"

Technological interventions play a prominent role in advancement and change in educational practices. The NEP 2020 also emphasises the potential AI has, to change the dynamics of the workplace and raise the demand for skilled workers who are fluent in mathematics, computer science, and data science, in conjunction with multidisciplinary abilities. The integration of AI into education has the potential to transform educational practices, providing a technologically advanced environment that promotes engagement, flexibility, and personalised learning. In the field of education, AI tools are instrumental in addressing the diverse learning needs of students, enabling educators to offer tailored educational experiences that foster inclusivity and enhance learning outcomes.

India has been working to promote AI in education for several years. The "AI for All" strategy was launched in 2018, focusing on education, smart cities, smart infrastructure, and agriculture (NITI Aayog, 2018). The following year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced the AI Integration for School Curriculum to create interactive, individualised learning experiences through smart classrooms and digital content.

Although India has taken various steps in recent years to integrate AI in school education, with both private and public institutions increasingly adopting AI technologies, government school teachers often have limited access to these advancements due to lack of training, resource constraints, time-bound curriculum, and lack of professional development opportunities.

To address these challenges, clause 4.24 of NEP 2020 recommends that curriculum should include subjects such as AI at relevant stages in education. It also recommends various steps for continuous professional development of teachers.

In line with this vision, CIET-NCERT, in collaboration with COL-CEMCA, is organising a five-day online training program titled "AI in Education" The training will be conducted in two versions: the English version from 18ᵗʰ to 22nd November 2024, and the Hindi version from 25th to 29ᵗʰ November 2024. The sessions will be held daily from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, providing educators with comprehensive insights into integrating AI with classroom practices. This will equip teachers with adequate skills to use AI-driven tools to create more effective, inclusive, and engaging learning environments.

Objectives:

After completion of the training series, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the significance of AI in contemporary education.
  • Examine the need and scope of AI for teaching and learning.
  • Develop expertise in integrating AI tools into classroom instruction.
  • Explore the use of AI for generating educational content.
  • Investigate the application of generative AI to teaching and learning.
  • Identify and utilise AI-powered tools to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
