"Special five days live programme in observance of International Sign Language Day"
Indian Sign Language (ISL) is a vital medium of communication for the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Recognized as an essential component of inclusive education, ISL upholds the right to communication and expression while fostering cognitive, emotional, and social development among learners with hearing impairments. Despite its importance, the use and understanding of ISL remain limited in India. Promoting ISL aligns with the country’s commitment to inclusive education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which supports United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), and celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity by integrating sign language into mainstream discourse. The United Nations observes the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23 to highlight the linguistic identity and cultural heritage of Deaf people and sign language users worldwide.
To mark this occasion and raise awareness about the importance of sign languages, CIET-NCERT is organizing Special Live interactive sessions from 15th to 19th September 2025. The objectives of the sessions are:
- To highlight Indian Sign Language as a vital tool for inclusion in education and society.
- To demonstrate how ISL promotes cognitive development and effective pedagogy.
- To showcase inclusive practices through sports, storytelling, and student voices.
- To promote the vision of nationwide integration of ISL through education, policy, and digital platforms.
The sessions will feature a range of resource persons, including experts from Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), educators, inclusive education practitioners, students with hearing impairments, and allied professionals.
