Digital Teacher: Evolving Competencies, Professional Identity and Practices

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, in its chapter on ‘Teachers’, recognises teachers as the core to the learning process and emphasises the need for continuous professional development to enable them to respond effectively to the changing demands of education. It advocates continuous opportunities for teachers to learn the latest pedagogical approaches, innovations and advances in their profession, including through technology-enabled platforms and online programmes (Chapter 5, Para 5.15). NEP 2020 further emphasises the development of professional standards for teachers, encompassing the competencies, professional values and roles required at different stages of their professional development (Chapter 5, Para 5.20). The Policy also highlights the importance of technology-enabled teaching-learning processes and digital pedagogy in enriching educational experiences and expanding access to quality learning resources (Chapter 4, Para 4.46; Chapter 23).

In this context, the evolving digital landscape is transforming teachers competencies, professional practices and roles. The integration of digital technologies in education requires teachers to develop the capacity to critically select, evaluate and meaningfully use digital tools and resources in accordance with pedagogical objectives and learners' diverse needs. Digital competency extends beyond the technical use of technology to include digital content creation, collaboration, communication, assessment, data-informed decision-making, ethical technology use and reflective professional practice. At the same time, technology is reshaping teachers’ professional identity by enabling new forms of collaboration, knowledge sharing, innovation and lifelong professional learning. Teachers remain central to ensuring that technology strengthens rather than replaces meaningful human interaction in education. Their role is evolving from being primarily transmitters of knowledge towards that of facilitators, mentors, designers of learning experiences, reflective practitioners and lifelong learners. Effective technology integration therefore requires teachers to exercise professional judgement, maintain ethical and responsible digital practices, and use technology to promote learner-centred, inclusive and competency-based education.

Therefore, CIET-NCERT is organising an online training on “Digital Teacher: Evolving Competencies, Professional Identity and Practices” to strengthen teachers’ understanding of emerging digital competencies and their implications for professional practice. The programme aims to enhance educators’ capacity to meaningfully integrate digital technologies into teaching-learning processes and develop reflective and data-informed practices, strengthen their evolving professional roles and identity, and use technology ethically and effectively to support inclusive, learner-centred and competency-based education in alignment with the vision of NEP 2020.
