Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and process information. Children and adults with ASD may experience challenges in social communication, behaviour, and sensory processing, while also possessing unique strengths and abilities. In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the importance of early identification, awareness, and inclusive support systems to help individuals with autism achieve their full potential. However, despite growing knowledge about autism, many stakeholder communities still have limited awareness and understanding of ASD. Misconceptions, stigma, and lack of information often lead to delayed diagnosis, inadequate educational support, and social exclusion of individuals with autism. This programme aims to bridge knowledge gaps by fostering understanding, acceptance, and inclusive practices within schools and communities.
Objectives
The main objectives of the programme are as follows:
- To create awareness about ASD and to help teachers understand the behavioural characteristics of children with autism in inclusive school settings.
- To reduce stigma and misconceptions about autism by building a culture of acceptance and respect within schools and society.
- To foster understanding of ASD in relation to social skills, communication abilities, sensory needs, and appropriate intervention strategies, and collaboration among schools, families, and communities in providing academic, behavioural, and social support to children with autism.
- To enable teachers, educators, special educators, parents, and community workers to understand the rights of students with autism under inclusive education policies and legal provisions.
- To motivate participants to move beyond awareness toward meaningful acceptance, empathy, and inclusive practices that create a deeper and lasting impact.
- To promote inclusive classroom practices aligned with the principles of Universal Design of Learning (UDL), ensuring equitable access to learning for autistic students.
